Curiosity at New Designers

Esther Patterson, a graduate in Decorative Arts from Nottingham Trent University, likes the element of surprise. With her new interior range of upholstered vintage chairs, bone china ceiling lamps, sandblasted hand blown glass shades and her new identity 'Curiousa & Curiousa', she promises to stand out from the crowd with her unusual style.

Esther says: 'The element of surprise, childhood memories, Englishness, beauty within perceived ugliness - are all synonymous with my work. I want to investigate ideas that are unconventional in their approach and challenge our ordinary perceptions of how things should be. From a distance my 1930's Baby Barbed armchair looks fluttery, feminine and appealing yet on closer inspection it's true nature is revealed, leaving the viewer with an air of unease yet compelled to explore further.'

Harriet Cox to exhibit at New Desingers part 2 2009 alongside Manchester School of art colleagues

Harriet Cox studied Three Dimensional Design at Manchester Metropolitan University focussing in particular on design for mass production. The designs she produces are functional and simple with a sensitivity towards certain material qualities and processes. It is from an interest in modern manufacturing processes where she finds her initial inspiration for a project.

At this years New Designers event Harriet will be exhibiting a range of products designed in the final year of her degree. Included in these will be Dip Light, a small table/ desk light. Dip light exploits the dip moulding process to create a tactile, flexible hollow shade which slides over the turned aluminium base. The shade, made from PVC, is double dipped to give a yellow colour on the inside and white on the outside. Due to the nature of the shades material the user is obliged to use a low energy bulb.

Harriet will also be exhibiting Bracket Tables. The corner ‘brackets’ water jet cut from steel provide a vital part in the table’s construction and also add a fun flash of colour. Coming in two different specifications and two different heights, a taller more luxurious maple wood table with orange corners or a shorter more utilitarian version of ply and white, this versatile piece highlights Harriet’s simple and contemporary style.

And finally on show will be Book Cube, a flexible piece of storage to house a small collection of books, which includes a space to store books, magazines or newspapers in use for a temporary amount of time. Book Cube is constructed from 1.6mm steel, laser cut and CNC folded. A powder coat is then applied as the surface finish. The wooden insert is made from a choice of plywood or white lacquered MDF. The Drawer is an optional extra providing an additional enclosed storage space.

STUDENT ABOUT TO LIGHT UP THE WORLD OF DESIGN.

STUDENT ABOUT TO LIGHT UP THE WORLD OF DESIGN.

Roll out the red carpet for the designers of 2009, the New Designer’s Exhibition is a tantalising taste of things to come from the UK’s best new comers.

The 2009 New Designer Exhibition is set to bring new standards of cutting edge design and innovation to the forefront of the industry, by providing the stage of opportunity to graduates. This significant and prestigious event is pivotal to every design graduate’s development within the industry.

New Designer’s is the playground for the next generation of talent, divided over a two week period the exhibition will set the scene within a wide variety of design disciplines from lighting design to fashion textiles.

Following in the footsteps of influential artists such as Ella Doran and Tomoko Azumi who were previously discovered at this exhibition, graduates are offered the break that could carve out their career.  New Designers is the platform to showcase their creations to leading industry experts and potential employers. For most, this is a culmination of 3 years hard work, honing and developing an individual style to define themselves as an artist within the highly competitive industry

A style that can easily be described as savvy, experimental and most definitely individual is Emma Crabtree’s work which is sure to create a stir.

This Swansea Met graduate’s work provides some of the freshest designs and innovative concepts, compiled with outstanding creativity and imagination. The success of her unusual illuminated polypropylene structures can be intrinsically linked to the huge amount of passion Emma shows towards the repetitive, intricately folded and pierced forms, each brought to life by the transformative qualities of light.

The light art is sparky, eye catching and a deliberately diverse combination of traditional and progressive techniques. Her solid understanding of design allows these mediums to blend in harmony with spectacular and breath taking results with laser cut pin pricks of light shinning through the traditional folds.

A significant global change in attitudes towards eco-friendly notions, inspired and shaped Emma’s illumination designs to encase and promote the future of lighting which lies with LED bulbs.

Be one of the first to see this understated concept with a contemporary twist at stand CA3 from the 9th to the 12th of July 2009.

Sarah Housley to exhibit at New Designers Part 2 2009

Sarah Housley will be showing two new pieces of work at New Designers Part 2 this July. The show is a prestigious event bringing together the best in creative graduate work and is held at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London from 16-19 July 2009.

Sarah Housley will be showing alongside other graduates from the BA (Hons) 3D Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. The work she will be showing comprises of pieces from projects undertaken in the final year of her degree.

Housley has a sunny, philosophical approach to design: she is fascinated by human relationships and the connections that we have both to each other and to the objects we use. The idiosyncrasies that people have and the way we use objects fascinate her, and the two projects on show at New Designers highlight this interest.

'Rituals' was a project exploring the ways in which we eat and drink and focussing on how to encourage people to interact, enjoy their food with each other and above all 'share'. The result of the project is a biscuit called 'Share' that encourages people to portion out chunks of the biscuit and 'donate' it to the people around them. 'Share' has five bite-sized chunks and is a delicious ginger biscuit. It brings out the best in people, no matter what their natural disposition would be.

'Adjustable Intimacy' was her final project and focussed on the way people sit together and the different ways in which they interact. The outcome of this project, 'so/fa', is a sofa sawn in half and then re-upholstered to show the differences, but also similarities, between people sitting together. 'so/fa' allows you to be as intimate or as distant as you would like, and to share your time with the people you sit with in whichever way you want to. It brings choice and flexible intimacy to a seating situation.

Sarah Housley is open to commissions and projects. Details of her work and contact details can be found at www.sarahhousley.com or alternatively she can be emailed at shousley@hotmail.com.

Universal Generator Shortlisted for INDEX : Design to improve life

Universal Generator Short listed for INDEX : Design to improve life

The Universal Generator was originally showcased at New Designers in 2008. It was Nominated for the INDEX : Design to Improve life Awards 2009 and was confirmed as a finalist this May.

About the Universal Generator

The 'Universal Generator’ embraces my aspiration to improve the quality of life for deprived and remote communities throughout the world by  genuinely sustainable means knowing that such communities develop ingenious and successful ways of survival by the imaginative use of what little is available to them.

This reliable and versatile device will enable them to release the full potential of their few resources to generate electricity to provide lighting and to power simple electrical devices such as radios. Scarce, valuable natural resources will no longer need to be destroyed to provide lighting and therefore remain available for other vital purposes. Furthermore, the present use of fuels within their homes to provide lighting and their associated dangers will be reduced.

I have designed it to be simple to use, easy to maintain and robust, to encourage its widespread use and maximize its potential. It is the most vulnerable members of these communities – the young, the elderly and the ill who will gain the most, but all will experience benefits to their everyday lives through adequate, reliable and sustainable lighting. Communities can continue to function after dark eg children can study, adults can work and people can meet and radios can provide knowledge from the outside world at all times. With growing confidence, it is the communities who will be empowered to fulfil their own particular needs.

The Design - In Essence ….
The core structure of this device consists of an outer and inner drum. Either drum can be anchored, whilst a source of kinetic energy revolves the other within or around the stationary one, thus generating electricity. Potential applications are maximized by a simple mechanism within the inner drum which allows the axle to be easily replaced by others of differing dimensions, and unique features on the outer shell which enable flexible positioning of the generator.
