Henna patterns brighten up 3D Design

Bright and eye catching henna patterns were the inspiration for a Preston student as she put her award winning work on show at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) this week.

Khadija Chohan, 22-years-old, from Ribbleton, is proudly displaying her cultural work at the University’s Art and Design Degree Show but she wants this show to kick start her into a career of designing jewellery.

The BA (Hons) 3D Design and Digital Modelling student, who also won a Goldsmiths’ Company’s Precious Metal Bursary Award early this year, has produced vase accessories, dressing screen, tray table along with a selection of brooches and armlets.

 She said: “I started off working with the mehndi (henna) patterns on jewellery and then it seemed to go from there and gel together into quite a collection. It’s such a pretty design and I like the colours I’ve got together. People have said they really like it too which is always nice.”

Her work is currently on display alongside fine art, ceramics, fashion promotion, textiles, illustration, photography and much more at UCLan until Saturday, 14 June.

Professor John Joughin, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said:  "Art, design and performing arts courses at the University rank amongst the best in the UK and our students continue to gain prestigious national awards including our success at the recent London Graduate Fashion Show. 

“The Degree Shows are a great opportunity to see excellent, original work in a vast range of creative disciplines. The exhibitions are free and we are keen to encourage the public to come along and take advantage of this marvellous event."

Jewel of an idea

The future looks bright for a prize-winning student from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) whose palm has been literally crossed with silver.

Khadija Chohan, a 3D Design with Digital Modelling student from Ribbleton, has won a Goldsmiths’ Company’s Precious Metal Bursary Award and her prize is £200 worth of sterling silver that will help to turn her jewellery designs into reality.

Khadija commented: “Jewellery making can be an expensive business, especially for student designers, so you could say this prize is a real silver lining for me.  I took my inspiration from Indian culture and other jewellery patterns from across the world using circles, points and strong lines. Once I leave UCLan I’d like to start my own jewellery making business although I’m also interested in furniture design and sculpture.”

The student designer produced three concepts based around the idea that body jewellery can be worn on any part of the body and could be used as an alternative to tattoos and piercings.

Commenting on her winning designs Course Leader Alan Phillips said: “Khadija has produced some fantastic ideas that will be of great appeal to the youth market. She fully deserves this prestigious award. Khadija’s newly acquired skills in computer aided design together with her practical skills will give her a real head start as a jewellery designer.”

Karin Paynter, one of the judges, said:  “The Company received 177 entries from 25 colleges across the country in this annual competition. The standard of entries was very high so Khadija Chohan should be justifiably proud of her achievement.”

Confronting society's view of women and 'The Body Beautiful' and drawing on her own feelings post enforced surgery and childbirth: Sue Applegate has produced a series of delicate porcelain vessels from Bellies and Breasts, which question the way in which women view themselves.
