Body Beautiful!

Katherine, Ka Wun Chan an emerging designer and maker at University College Falmouth launches her first collection of mirrors (and masks) reflecting her exploration of contemporary body image.

Highly influenced by the current trend and culture of extreme dieting. Like many others, the artist struggles to live up to the perception of modern ideology. Through conversations with peers and information from medias, Katherine develops her interest on Body image. Those supermodels with ultra-slim figures and the artist’s own unpleasing experiences regarding her figure trigged the search of true beauty.

The mirrors are crafted using methods of laser cutting with wood combined with sandblasted calligraphy or figurative line drawings on mirrors.

Since we cannot fight against our nature to seek for beauty, then let’s face it! The mirrors are there to reassure the idea of ‘You are beautiful, just the way you are’ and help boost self-confidence.

Let’s celebrate our gorgeous figures!

Let’s enjoy being ourselves!

PRIZE-WINNER GLOWS WITH PRIDE

TOM RUBASHOW

12:00 - 06 June 2008

A Student from Paddock Wood won a prize for her work at an exhibition for up-and-coming artists.

Sarah Osborne, 23, of Chantler's Hill, displayed her ceramic sculptures at the end-of-year degree show, at Canterbury Christ Church University's Sidney Cooper Gallery.

Her work features ceramic sculptures inscribed with messages from children who have had experience of death.

During a series of workshops with children from Goudhurst and Kilndown Primary School the children wrote letters to deceased family members and she inscribed their messages into miniature boats conatining tea lights which they together set sail into a local pond.

Miss Osbourne, who has completed a BA Joint Hons Fine Art and Early Childhood Studies degree at the university, said: "My work is inspired by life and death, the Buddhist festival of Obon and working with children.

"The poems encourage the children to talk about death and focus on the positives of life."
