Laura Brown a recent graduate of UCA Rochester has been selected to exhibit her work at New Designers.  Her work will be exhibited during Part 1 of New Designers from 9 to 12 July 2009 at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London N1. 

New Designers brings together the very best in UK graduate design, showcasing the work, energy and talent of the next generation of designers.  

Laura studied the subject of Applied Art, yet her work also sits comfortably in the world of Fine Art.  She is a conceptual artist and produces original works that are intended for public exhibition, and equally she creates designs that can be suitably reproduced for the purposes of a mass market. 

Laura takes inspiration for her work through observing and reflecting on contemporary urban British society.  Much of her work is a reaction to an apathetic and disordered society she believes we live in today.  Her work often portrays strong cultural messages that respond to government policy.

In addition to her studies on today’s society, Laura often uses iconic symbols or objects from the past in the design or making of her work.  By taking the element of both value and culture, found in contemporary British society, and mixing them with historic, iconic British objects, Laura produces work that is both witty and edgy, with an added touch of irony.   

Laura is currently starting a new business venture with her co-partner.  For creative people, The Deaf Cat is a place to meet, work, exhibit, promote, share and inspire others.  Laura’s entrepreneurial spirit led her towards this concept after moving from London to Kent and finding there were very few creative outlets.  The Deaf Cat is based in historic Rochester and has artists’ studios, gallery spaces, a meeting room, an expansive programme of creative workshops and events together with a contemporary, coffee bar and an inspirational, peaceful garden in which to relax. 

Laura’s work can be seen during Part 1 of New Designers, during the Private Press and Awards day on Wednesday 8 July 2009, and open to the general public from Thursday 9 July to Sunday 12 July 2009.
