Dec 2005 - Jessamy Kelly - Place introduces Jessamy Kelly
Place, a new homeware concept devised by Kevin McCloud, in partnership with retail entrepreneur, Mary Czulowski, is delighted to introduce Jessamy Kelly as a member of the design team. Kevin and Mary have commissioned a team of eleven established and up-and-coming designers from around the world, to create a coherent collection of furniture, furnishings and accessories that are thoughtfully designed, durable, made with care and respect, utilizing ethically produced and sustainable materials, and sold with integrity. Jessamy Kelly creates glass and ceramic designs and has developed a wide range of glass stemware and giftware for the first Place collection. Pieces include vases, bowls, wine, spirit and champagne glasses. Inspiration for her range of products comes from organic and naturally repeating forms underpinned by the hand crafted sensitivity of glassblowing. Minimal details such as acid etching or finely pulled stemware is used to create a soft sensitive aesthetic that realises the qualities of balance, precision and delicacy. Kelly’s work celebrates the handmade and crafted process of glassmaking, which she believes gives her more freedom to explore new forms and innovations. She says, “The creation of objects that look and feel flawless, untouched by a human hand are flooding into the marketplace. However with this machine aesthetic comes large quantity runs of very similar, generic products. This industrial fervour tends to reduce the options on the high street. Working on low quantity runs gives me as a designer more freedom and newness is gained by reinventing the traditional skills of the craft in innovative ways.” Since graduating from the University of Sunderland with a degree in Glass and Ceramics, Kelly went on to complete her Masters degree in Glass Product Design at Edinburgh College of Art in December 2002. She is currently studying for her PHD in Glass and Ceramics, which she is due to complete in 2009.
