Jul 2007 - Heidi Turner - HEIDI TURNER PARTICIPATING AT PRESTIGIOUS DESIGN EXHIBITION
Heidi Turner, a contemporary textile designer raised in South Africa, but now based in the North Yorkshire Moors, has been selected to participate in New Designers 2007 as part of the One Year On showcase. The exciting 2007 exhibition takes place in London at the Business Design Centre between 5 and 15 July with different design disciplines presented each week. New Designers is a key industry forum to identify young contemporary applied artists and designers who will be making their names in the creative industries. Most of the exhibitors are graduating from design colleges, but the One Year On showcase, curated by Thorsten Van Elten, promotes the work of selected designer makers who made their professional debut in the past 12 months. Many emerged as graduates at New Designers last year, with Heidi one such example, being the recipient of the 2006 Textile Society award. Heidi combines beautiful embroidery with mixed media textiles, for both fashion and interiors, made in her home studio. She will be showing pieces from her extended collection inspired by Eastern European folk art and fusing traditional fabrics with contemporary digital printing and intricate embellishment. Myth, birds and natural motifs both collide, but combine, to striking effect. The collection includes cushions, wall hangings and selected fashion work. ‘I’m so thrilled to have been chosen to exhibit at this particular show, and have been working hard towards it. I’m really hoping to take this opportunity to further develop my business and hope the passion in my work connects with the viewer’ says Heidi Turner. A graduate of Cleveland College of Art and Design, and a mother of two young children, Heidi has over many years assembled a range of expert skills, both in South Africa and the UK. Her Eastern European heritage stimulated a journey through textiles that places myth and wonder as the constant backcloth in her work with imaginative and intriguing embroidery and fabric speaking to tradition. Heidi’s work has been well recognised in industry publications and she also won the 2006 Hand and Lock International Embroidery prize. -ends- For more information please contact Heidi Turner on (01609) 883855 (h), Heiditurner.co.uk or turners3@btinternet.com
