Jul 2007 - Rebecca Shreeve - QUIRKY CREATURES BRING AWARD FOR CHILDREN'S TEXTILE DESIGNER
Graduating Textile Design student Rebecca Shreeve has won a national award for her exciting children's textiles featuring quirky creatures like 'Milton the bat'. Rebecca, from Carlton Colville, Suffolk, will graduate BA (Hons) in Mixed Media Textile Design from De Montfort University Leicester next week, and has just been awarded the Embroiderers' Guild and Coats Craft UK Award. The accolade came at New Designers, the leading annual event in graduate design that showcases the talent of some 4000 new designers at the Business Design Centre, London. Her work entitled 'Secret Garden' is aimed at children and the young at heart and uses unique imagery inspired by iron gates, pathways, trellis and British wildlife. "I've turned this imagery into interesting and vibrantpatterns with unique illustrative qualities. I produce whimsical fabrics and toys which are full of character; the creatures are all named and given a quirky character, for instance Milton the bat enjoys flying his kite but he does not like heights much himself," said Rebecca, 22. "I still can't believe that I won! I am very excited about the award and the opportunities I hope to gain from it. The award consists of £1000 prize, a two month paid placement and the opportunity to exhibit at the four Knit and Stitch shows in London, NEC Birmingham, Dublinand Harrogate. The soft fabrics she uses make her work tactile and give it a 'cosy' quality, and the added stitch work and motifs make her designs textured and detailed. Her innovative work was also recently recognised in the RSA Design Directions competition in which she was Highly Commended for her range of fabrics around the theme 'reviving the British seaside'. The course has prepared us all for the working world as the products we produce commercially viable. The tutors have been very helpful and pushed us really hard. I would recommend to anyone interested in textiles to take this course as you learn so much and gain so much from it."
