Your clothes seem quite arty. Are they wearable? Definitely, They used to be a lot more arty so I altered them so they could worn as evening wear, for a glamorous event, perhaps it’s wearable art. What look are you going for? I don't tend to look at fashion trends; instead I look at the fabric and pleating, experimenting with different forms and shapes. I prefer to look at my pieces, as individual pieces of art. When studying I made sculptural headpieces, and I use the same techniques to make the clothes which adds a unique twist on my pieces. Art has influenced you slot we take it? Absolutely. Most of my education has been art orientated; just happened to do a textiles module at university and liked the way art translates itself through the clothes. I spent four months in India and when I came back Alternative Fashion Week asked if I wanted to showcase my collection. I was thrilled to bits! I had originally submitted headwear and slippers so had to work like a mad woman to get the matching outfits done. Describe your style? Very abstract, pleated structural pieces in muted colours; with a lot of silver organza, leathers and a lot of intricate detail work. There are some dresses which are made entirely from 900 pocketed constructions, so there’s an incredible amount of stitch work on each piece. I might take them to India to get sewn! What inspires you? The sea, shells, natural forms which all have inspiring surface textures. Would you make Asian clothes? I have my own style, which I can adapt to Asian clothes. I’ve been asked to make a sari so I may experiment with designs around the border. Future Plans? I’ve done few shows and plan to get commissioned work. My work is word-of-mouth and I plan to keep the pieces one-off – I can’t stand the thought of mass producing them! For further information, contact Deepa on deepapanchamia@yahoo.co.uk
