Jun 2005 - Jude Stoll - ANOTHER LIFE – New future from old rubbish |
|
Jude Stoll, a contemporary glass artist based in Stoke-on-Trent, develops her work through emphasizing the unique qualities to be found in waste. Recently selected by an independent panel appointed by the Crafts Council, she is to participate in One Year On, a special showcase at the New Designers Exhibition in London’s Business Design Centre. This year the prestigious exhibition runs from 30th June to 10th July, with her discipline, glass, being shown in the first week. It was at New Designers less than 12 months ago that Stoll, then a graduate fresh out of university, won the DKNY Future of Design award and also took home the runner up prize from the Bombay Sapphire glass design competition. Each summer, New Designers brings the best of new British design talent together under one roof. It is here that most contemporary applied artists and designers get the first chance to show their creations to industry, and a place where many careers are launched. One Year On is a Crafts Council showcase within New Designers that brings together those artists and designers who are ‘tipped for the top’ and allows the creative industries to see how they have developed their work in the last 12 months. Stoll is undoubtedly one of the country’s hottest new design talents working in glass. Dedicated to recycling other people’s rubbish and dealing with environmental issues, she reacts to the materials she finds and breaths new life into them using her creative alchemy. At One Year On she will be showcasing a new collection of work created over the last 6 months, ‘Decadence with a Conscience’. From lighting to architectural panels, Stoll has reworked found glass bottles until they are unrecognisable. ‘My work received a fantastic reception at New Designers last year, which gave me the confidence I needed to continue using recycled materials in my work. I relish the irony that the waste of our overly consumer led society is reincarnated and fed back into the consumer loop. Being selected by the Crafts Council to return this year and exhibit at One Year On is a great opportunity. 12,000 people, all of them passionate about good design, came through the doors last year, bringing with them endless possibilities. Lets hope that this year that number increases,’ said Stoll Since graduation she and her husband, ceramicist Ed Bentley, whom she met at University, have recycled some old industrial buildings left over from the Stoke-on-Trent pottery industry. It is here, surrounded by discarded machinery, skips full or rubbish and a fantastic view over ‘the potteries’ that they find inspiration. Her first solo exhibition ‘Another Life’ at Manchester Craft and Design Centre ran in May and June 2005 showing her provocative, curious and occasionally humorous sculptures commenting on issues such as ecological tragedy, consumerism and contemporary society. After One Year On, her work can be seen at a group exhibition ‘New Artworks in Glass’ at Cowdy Gallery in Gloucestershire in July and August. During this time Stoll will be travelling to Seattle, USA for a summer school at the world-renowned Pilchuck Glass School, where she will be taught by Robbie Miller and Ian Drury, two USA based glass artists who specialise in recycled glass. Stoll states, “Recycling is achievable by everyone, it only costs us a little thought and time. By using waste materials to create my work, I am leading by example, and the fact that I use familiar, everyday objects within my work means that the issues that I highlight for debate are accessible to a wide audience.” One Year On Business Design Centre, London N1 30th June – 3rd July 2005 New Artworks in Glass Cowdy Gallery, Newent, GL18 16th July – 20th August 2005 For more information please contact: Jude Stoll on Telephone number 01792 769287, Mobile 07761 588 772, E-mail jude@stollybolly.co.uk
