PRESS RELEASE – Release Immediate - June 2006 OLD DOG , NEW TRICKS Ed Bentley, a contemporary ceramicist based in Cumbria, creates one off hand built sculptures inspired by aerodynamics and architecture. He has been selected to show during week one of the prestigious New Designers Exhibition at Islington’s Business Design Centre, which this year runs from 29th June – 2nd July. Bentley first showed here as a new graduate in 2004, however the abstract sculpture that he will exhibit this year on stand ND01 of the newdesignersonline showcase is unrecognisable from the tableware he showed during his first visit. Bentley stated, “My work has evolved enormously from the table and giftware that I showed here in 2004. During the last two years I have moved away from the millimetre perfection of functional ceramics and have enjoyed the freedom and improvisation of abstract sculpture. Returning to New Designers is a wonderful opportunity and allows me a second chance to engage people with my work. It’s also a place that holds great memories for me as I proposed to my wife Jude here in 2004” Coincidentally, the work of his wife Jude Stoll, a recycled glass artist and previous New Designers award winner can be seen on an adjacent stand in the newdesignersonline area. The evolution of Bentley’s work was facilitated by his selection in 2005 as one of eight designer/makers on the Crafts Council’s Next Move scheme. This two year residency at the recently refurbished ceramic department of Cumbria Institute of the Arts has allowed him time to develop this impressive new body of work, supported both financially and technically by the Crafts Council and the Institute. Bentley’s technical, industrial ceramics skills have been well utilised to produce this wonderfully resolved abstract work, and no doubt the skills that he has gained though working on this abstract sculpture will be transferred back to functional ware in some way in the future. It is this capacity to successfully bridge the disciplines of both art and design that will inevitably lead to him having an accomplished career.
