Jun 2007 - Joanne Lamb - LIVING GLASS FOR BELFAST LASS UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER GRADUATION SHOW JUNE 5TH
LIVING GLASS FOR BELFAST LASS It’s not hard to see where Belfast born Joanne Lamb gets her inspiration from. The imagery simply fell into her lap, as she looks to her Belfast roots and its historic buildings with a particular passion for the beautiful Cathedral church of St Anne’s Belfast, just 100 metres away from her university campus. The result is exhibited at the University of Ulster, Belfast from the 4th June with an array of truly innovative translucent light diffusing fabrics. The entitled ‘Fabric Glass,’ collection has the appearance and quality of glass yet they are wonderfully tactile and drapable. Incorporated into her designs are tactile bubble wrap-esque structures and I defy anyone to not reach out and touch the textured surface. The collection has a weightless atmosphere about them due to a combination of nylon monofilament together with silk and an eye catching light reflective tape. The textiles demonstrate how the various changes in light can be incorporated in both the conclusion and viewing of the work. These fabrics have not been designed for interiors in the conventional sense as they are to be used as flexible partitioning screens within the contract market and also for architectural spaces. Textile designers normally fall into two distinct camps: those who enjoy embellishing the surface and those who like to get their teeth into the actual structure of the cloth. Joanne’s specialist discipline within textile design is in woven fabrics stating, “there is something very satisfying about creating cloth from scratch,” but this is were she is different as she also integrates print processes into her designs to create contrasting areas of translucency and opacity. Joanne Lamb’s sparkling talent and creative drive has resulted in a modern collection of textiles that are particularly personal to her and very interesting to all. If you miss her in Belfast catch her at New Designers, London from the 5th July!
