The final-year students, who have just held their End of Year Show at the Belfast campus, will join 4,000 young designers from all over the world at this prestigious event. The ‘New Designers Exhibition’ attracts an audience of over 17,000 design hungry visitors each year, both consumers and trade from around the globe and has an unrivalled reputation for launching the careers of many young designers. The young designers will also take part in the ‘New Designers Award Scheme’, with the chance of winning cash prizes and employment with top international textile and fashion companies. Noreen Conwell-Kerr, Textiles and Fashion Design lecturer at UU said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for these students to showcase their work on an international stage and to gain first hand experience of commercial design practices globally. The work produced from this final year group is of a very high standard with four of the students achieving first class honours in their final assessments.” “The New Designers Exhibition is unrivalled in Europe in its scope, scale and size and in its ability to attract companies looking to work with young designers in the future.” This will be an excellent opportunity for the students and for the University to develop partnerships with design companies globally. It will also enhance the potential for further start-up design businesses in Northern Ireland and increase awareness of the potential to enhance the development of the creative industries within the local economy. “It is very important that our graduates grasp opportunities such as this. Now that Northern Ireland’s future is looking more positive it is important that we retain our high calibre textiles and fashion graduates.” The New Designers Exhibition takes place at the Business Design Centre, 52 Upper Street, Islington, London from July 05 – 08 2007.
