Jun 2007 - Paget Scott-McCarthy - 'Class acts of 2007' Constance Harris for the Irish Dependent
‘...As I interviewed the class of 2007 in NCAD’s fashion and textiles graduation class, I was massively impressed at their cohesion. It was very clear to me that this was a class that was full of individually minded women but who worked together , an uncommon occurrence in most high profile fashion schools. But then working together is becoming a bit of a trademark of the Irish fashion industry as a whole, I am very glad to report. ‘They’re a fantastic bunch,’ Linda Byrne, fashion lecturer at NCAD, whom I have known since she worked with Helen McAlinden, said. ‘Right from the start it was clear that they were a very together group of people. They have a very strong ethic, the like of which I have not seen before, I am really going to miss them.’ When I interviewed each student in NCAD last week, it was clear that they believed in what they did, they listened to my comments, sometimes criticism (very rar), and they were willing to explore my opinions. The first thing that struck me about the collections of this year’s graduates is how well constructed they were. From cutting to finish it was all faultless, The second thing was that there were several collections that I wanted to buy from because they beautiful and wearable and innovative. I have to admit to being a bit of a textile department groupie. Unlike the fashion students who are dominated by form for the entirety of their training, textile students are immersed in interior composition and then work from that interior world of fabric to the outside world of form. I loved Paget Scott-McCarthy’s ethereal prints, also inspired by the past, in romantic, free-flowing clothing…’
