Jun 2007 - Victoria Scholes - DOMESTIC GOSPELS: HOUSEWORK, TAKE TWO Victoria Scholes at New Designer
Victoria Scholes presents ‘Domestic Gospels’, a series of eye catching sculptures that bring a whole new perspective to daily chores. Everyday objects such as dustpans and washing-up brushes are reinvented using a variety of unexpected materials, including brightly patterned glass, melted glass rod and finely crafted wood, making quirky and light-hearted meditations on household tasks and their marginal but ever-present place in our lives. Graduating with distinction from Wolverhampton University with an MA in Art and Design (Glass), Scholes has a number of accolades already under her belt. In 2006, she was short listed for the prestigious British Glass Biennale, and she is one of just 25 glass artists selected to represent contemporary glass practice in the upcoming Side by Side exhibition organised by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and the Contemporary Glass Society, taking place in Devon in September 2007. This imaginative, and sometimes spiritual, approach to glass-making is fed by her breadth of experience in areas as diverse as the pharmaceutical industry and the Anglican priesthood (she still practices). “My work always begins with the familiar - the everyday things that make up the fabric of our existence - but I look for those points where the imagination can work to transform what we think we already know into something new and different.” Working from her studio in the gentle hills at edge of the Peak District, Scholes has already built a reputation as a lively and thoughtful artist and designer. See her work at New Designers part 1: 5 - 8 July; 100% Glass at the Three White Walls Gallery, Birmingham; 27 July - 5 Sept; and at Side by Side at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Tracey, Devon; 22 Sept - 4 Nov 2007.
