In Living Memory-Sharon Walsh's Retro Designs. Textile designer Sharon Walsh is making her mark with a range of innovative fabrics. Walsh specialised in stitch and embroidery during her degree as she found it to be 'the most experimental of all the disciplines'. 'We were constantly encouraged to find innovative of manipulating a flat piece of fabric into something totally unique and contemporary. I found this intense level of experimentation highly challenging. It was also an instrumental process which led to the development of the distress techniques which have formed my current designs.' Her graduate collection was inspired by the concept of creating new from old. 'I used my mother as an inspiration source for this project and collected a selection of discarded objects belonging to her, which portrayed a story of her recent and distant past', explains Walsh. She grouped these objects into 'memory garlands' in order to create a new interpretation of her mother's forgotten past. 'I then translated this concept of creating new from old into my design work by collecting second hand printed furnishing fabrics and bonding plain, new fabrics on top of them. I then manipulated select areas of the base design onto the top fabric to create innovative,one-off textiles for both fashion and interiors.' The techniques Walsh developed along with the conceptual ideas behind the work evolved into a unique collection which she has been devoted to promoting since leaving college last year.
