Mar 2007 - Linda Baker - The Beauty of Stitch and Stone |
|
Furthering the traditions of textile art, Linda Baker is creating unique ethereal sculptural forms combining stitch, lace fragments and stone. These beautiful and intricate structures contrast the fragility of thread with the weight and permanence of stone. They evoke remote life forms surviving at the edge of existence and reference connections with human frailty and tenacity. The metaphorical weight of these pieces communicates powerfully Linda’s ideas and emotions. Her intimate knowledge of textiles combined with a keen eye for modern artistic trends has led her to create outstanding inspirational work. Linda’s formative years spent in Lancashire were enmeshed with her family traditions of sewing and embroidery. Having worked as a fashion designer for many years in London and then raised a family she decided to develop her artistic talents further. She has recently obtained a university honours degree in Applied Art, naturally specialising in textiles. Since graduating she has been selected as a Licentiate (with Distinction) member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and has also been selected for several exhibitions gaining an enthusiastic response. Linda produces exclusive one-off textile art pieces and also works to commission
