May 2005 - Ulrika Jarl - Jarls' bright ideas
Designer/maker Ulrika Jarl, 27, graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA (Hons.) degree in Three-dimensional Crafts. (Wood, Metal, Ceramics, Plastics) in 2004. A Swedish native, she left Gothenburg for London in 1996. She is currently living and working in Brighton. Her work is mainly bone china lighting, but she also makes other objects for the home using a range of materials and techniques. Natures’ forms and textures inform Jarls’ work, there is a clear influence of patterns and structures of nature, the rhythm and repetition of significant related shapes. She captures the beauty and function in details of natural forms, revealing patterns of balance and harmony. Nature’s designs, although containing highly complex structural elements, appear uncomplicated. She chiefly uses bone china, which lends itself well to lighting with regards to its strength, whiteness and translucency. The light element transforms the object and the way it is perceived, adding another element to her creations. Her lighting products does not only reflect the light but sometimes transforms the lamp into a sculptural object rather than a lighting source. The shadows cast are as important as the light. Jarl’s bone china wall light, currently stocked by ‘Beyond The Valley’ 26 Ganton Street, off Carnaby Street, London is being produced by array ceramics, and further retail outlets are being sourced across the country and abroad. Her work can also be found in George Smith Furniture Showroom, 587 – 589 Kings Road, London. She is currently in negotiations with a major british furniture retailer regarding production of her Romanésco pendant light.
