“On the cusp*. House or Home” New Exhibition coming soon to the Washington Gallery, Penarth 'Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful' (William Morris) Are our houses and homes just glorified 'little boxes' or are they something more? These are all physical spaces in which we inhabit, exist and create our lives whether it is in a building, temporary structure or place that we have come to know as 'Home'. House and Home are two different terms, used to categorise the structure in which people live. 'Home' is referred to as a place of comfort, security, safety, even a world of its own. Home is seen as the space in which wee feel the most secure and content and where we are able to be our selves, provoking a feeling that once you have shut that door no body can get to you. People grow up and raise their families within these Homes; the buildings become filled with memories and traces of the people that dwell in the spaces of their homes. A building can have many different functions, shelter, liveable space or simply protection. At what point does it stop being, shelter, function or a home and when does it become art? Our homes and the way artists portray these spaces share some of the same components: but is there a divide between the two, or can they merge in harmony together? Is function the main point or is it the aesthetics of the home that is crucial? This new exhibition, supported by the Arts Council of Wales takes a dynamic and fresh twist on the furniture and products that we place in our homes. Those showing include Max Lamb, Deadgood Design, Kirsty Patrick, Lee Kirkbride, Anna Jones, Rachel Horrocks, William Jones, Claire Alderdice and also featuring Howies clothing. Notes: You can see the exhibition at The Washington Gallery Penarth, between the 22nd October and the 5th November 2007 Open daily Stanwell Rd Penarth Cf64 1AD 02920712100 www.washingtongallery.co.uk
