As British design talent gathers next week at the London Design festival 2006, recently graduated jewellery designer Kathy Vones is preparing to show her collection of marine inspired light objects at the old Truman Brewery as part of the New Designers Selection show. Having stunned audiences in London with her flamboyant and sculptural jewellery at the New Designers show in July, Vones will now exhibit light creations which are constructed of vacuum formed PVC shapes, hand-dyed nylon and silicone. “I wanted to create light objects which blur the boundaries between man and nature – unusual, handmade objects which convey my fascination for the deep sea environment, but are ultimately designed to be displayed in people’s homes,” Vones says of her Jellyfish Chandelier. Being one of 50 recent design graduates which were selected from the shortlists of the New Designers awards committee, Vones’ work draws its influences from nature, specifically the deep sea environment and its cycles of growth, maturity and decay. This fascination is also reflected in her jewellery, which combines brightly coloured silicone shapes with wire structures and finely textured sheet metal, humorously exploring notions of preciousness and value. At an upcoming exhibition with the Designer Jewellers Group at the Barbican Centre in November, Vones will display a new range of silver and gold jewellery. She explains that: “For me, the creation of my jewellery and light objects is closely connected by my desire to develop an aesthetic which does not merely emulate nature, but instead aims to mutate the artificial into the natural.”
