Sep 2007 - Paget Scott-McCarthy - 'Paget Scott-McCarthy, Embroidered and Printed Textiles- National |
|
Paget did a portfolio course in Cork before she came to study at the National College of Art and Design. ‘There was a class called combined materials. You experimented with sewing and a variety of fabrics. I immediately knew that was what I wanted to do.’ The students do a lot of market research and Paget visited lots of interior and fashion companies. She wanted to illustrate how textile prints can be adapted for other products. She was also a finalist for the Nokia Young Fashion Designer of the Year, and that encouraged her to make garments. ‘My collection is called Impermanence, an awareness of the impermanence of our own nature, our surroundings and the daily objects we use. I was also focusing on how people interpret an idyllic and simplistic lifestyle with a serious principle throughout. My visual sources have been mainly birds, moths and bicycles. I wanted Scandinavian influences to be evident as they use natural colours and organic shapes and yet retain a strong modernity.’ Paget worked extensively with print, digital and screen, translating both her drawings and paintings and her repeat patterns. She explored multi headed embroidery as well as hand and machine embroidery. ‘ I want experience working with companies I really respect. Marimekko in Finland do a lot of design, mainly interiors but also fashion. I’d like to have something like that under my belt.’
