Company: PRYSOR
Unique Architectural Metalwork
Designer: Dewi Prysor
--------BEGINS--------
The Re-Emergence of Decorative Metalwork, a New Style for the 21st century
Graduating from Hereford College of Arts this summer, Dewi Prysor is looking to usher in a new era and direction for decorative metalwork in Britain. His fledgling company, operating under his own name, will be offering a unique design and manufacturing service for clients interested in his new emerging style of architectural metalwork.
Dewi has not followed a traditional educational route in the pursuit of his ambition. Following courses at both art and engineering colleges in Cambridge, he took up a post in Suffolk, working with a specialist company creating finely engineered components for the motorsport industry. ‘This was a really competitive environment and I was pushed to learn new skills extremely quickly, I think I thrive under those sorts of conditions.’ Says Dewi. Despite making good progress, he knew his creative urge to work with metal was not sufficiently satisfied and he succeeded in obtaining a place at Hereford College of Art ‘I went there with a really strong technical ability and a determination to apply myself and to develop ideas that were exciting, challenging and new’ says Dewi.
Dewi’s work has strong underlying philosophies. “I’ve developed a sculpturally led vocabulary of forms, both structural and decorative, that when used in different contexts can provide solutions that fit in with existing architecture, whether it be a country manor house, a converted barn or even a Minimalist build. The composition, placement and proportions and the need for applied ornament may change, but the vocabulary is clearly of the same family.” says Dewi.
“I want to move the structural and decorative needs of contemporary architectural metalwork away from tired and out of date scroll work styles, and unimaginative, poorly made mass produced products. I think there needs to be a real consideration about how we deal with architectural metalwork to satisfy emerging modern aesthetics, in the cultural and environmental backdrop of today and tomorrow. I feel there’s a need to maintain the formality and the sense of quality and craftsmanship that hand made scroll work styles help to portray, however we have to step away from a style that embodies the past, and move on, to accommodate the continuing evolution of architecture and the role of the craftsman within it”
He hopes this new direction will “herald a new style for architectural metalwork”. Examples of his work will be showcased at this year’s New Designers Exhibition, at the Business Design Centre, Islington, from the 1st through to the 6th July 2008.
